Remove the sample text running sessions in the left pane #11

I'd like to remove the sample text that is included in the left pane when a step is running, it's just distracting and not helpful. Just having the "Thinking" and the timer and the progress bar is good enough. I've noticed the progress bar doesn't always show up though, which is a bit confusing.

In this screenshot the text I'm referring to is:

  • "Stopped worker goes s..."
  • last heartbeat age (e.g. ...)
  • 2 tools bash (ls -la /U...
  • 4 tools read(events.ts)

Shipped by Braid's own run on this issue, merged as #19 (merge commit d3234cd). The OpenSpec change is archived as openspec/changes/archive/2026-09-14-remove-the-sample-text-running-sessions-5qm7wr/, and run-spine gains four requirements (commit f717674).

What changed: a running step's row in the left pane now shows only its status word and timer, e.g. Reading · 4m 14s.

  • Removed from the line: the tool count, the last tool and its target (4 tools read(events.ts)), and the streamed text (Stopped worker goes s…).
  • A quiet step keeps its alarm words (silent for 9m, engine unreachable: …) but drops the trailing detail (— last: tool:bash, , last seen 1m 20s ago).
  • The full sentence is still there if you want it: hover the row.
  • The row keeps its two-line height, so nothing jumps.

running rows after the change

The progress bar: the token meter is unchanged. It only draws once the step has reported its first token count, which is why it doesn't always show up at the start of a step. The change explains this but doesn't alter it; if you want the meter drawn empty from the first frame, that's a small follow-up.

Tested:

  • vitest for the new line and hover sentence;
  • a new e2e/spine-activity.spec.ts: line is phrase and clock only, hover carries the full sentence, meter still draws, row height stays stable while streaming, and an engine-unreachable row never degrades to silent for …;
  • on main after the merge: tsc clean, vitest 344 passed;
  • I checked the running rows in a browser.
